What a great way to end the week I first ever saw Sumo wrestling live!

二人目の外国人横綱の武蔵丸さんと一緒に！

This is Musashimaru, the second ever foreigner to reach Sumo's highest rank of Yokozuna.  I usually feel pretty big in this country but...

Musashimaru san is not just big, but has a realy aura about him.  It was an honour to meet him, and a moment I will never forget.

昨日の夜阪急インターナショナルホテルで武蔵川部屋の打ち上げパーティで花子師匠から短い出番いただきました。出番が終わったら師匠と一緒にパーティのいろんな参加者と写真とりました。この写真で花子師匠はお相撲さんの上着を試着してみています。さすがにでかいですね。XXXXLサイズだそうです。

Yesterday Hanako Shisho invited me to perform with her at the Musashigawa Beya Sumo party.  After we performed we went around and took some pictures with various people at the party.  In this picture, Hanako Shisho is trying on one of the Sumo wrestler's jackets.  It's really big.  Apparently they call it XXXXL.

昨日宮川大助師匠とお娘さんの宮川さゆみ姉さんが子供のミュージカル出ていらしゃいました。子供は六か月頑張ってこのミュージカルを作ったそうです。子どもたちは信じられないほど踊り上手でした。感動しました。

大助師匠の約は子供のハンス・クリスチャン・アンデルセンデンマークの童話作家でした（１８０５年ー１８７５年）。ミュージカルの最初んぼ場面でアンデルセンの彫像がいきなり動いて来るんです。師匠は素晴らしかったです、とても感動しました。このメークはをつけるのは３０かかったそうです。さゆみ姉さんも凄く面白かったです。掃除のおばちゃんで、アンデルセンの彫像を見たら「あんたは私の死んだお父ちゃんにそっくり！」と言いました。その台詞はさすがにとてもうけました。

I went to see Daisuke Shisho and his daughter Sayumi San in a Children's play based on stories from Hans Christian Anderson.  The cast apparently worked on the show for six months.  The children's dancing was really incredible.

Daisuke Shisho played a statue of Anderson who comes to life and befriends a little girl.  He was truly fantastic in the role - his performance was very moving.  Sayumi san was hilarious as a cleaning lady who at one point as she is dusting off the statue says, "You look just like my dead father!".  That line got a huge reaction.

Great work everyone!

やっぱり有名人になると名前がいろんなところで使われることになりますね。仕方がない。ここクリーニングだしたら割引をいただけるんですかな・・・

This dry cleaner has great taste in names.  They called themselves "Sunshine Cleaners".   I wonder if they would give me a discount on my cleaning...

昨日お相撲の帰りでなんば駅の近く魔法少女なのはに会いました。マジックを見せて頂きませんでしたが、御挨拶だけできてとても嬉しかったです。

Yesterday on my way home from Sumo I ran into none other that Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha.  She didn't show me any magic, but it was a pleasure to meet her anyway.

先日の宝塚にあった落語会で初めて鳴り物を叩きました。ボロボロでしたけど、これから凄く太鼓に力入れたいと思います。

二番太鼓は兄弟子の桂三段と一緒に叩きました。

The other day I played Japanese drums called Taiko for the first time at a Rakugo performance (with shamisen and flute, we play for the entrance and exits of the performers).  I wasn't very good, but got through it.

My drumming partner was the handsome and always very funny Katsura Sandan.  ]

I need more practice...

おととい初めてお相撲を見に行きました。凄く面白かったです。当たり前なことなんですけど、生で見るのは全然違います。力士は本当に迫力ありますね。感動しました。初めてお相撲を見るタイミングはすごくよかったです。横綱の白鵬とこれから大関になる関脇把瑠都は二人とも１０−０、一回も負けていません。ものすごく盛り上がりましたが、結局横綱のほうは強かったです。写真は私の席から撮った把瑠都と白鵬です。

The day before yesterday I went to see Sumo live for the first time.  Sumo is at least 1500 years old and is a sport steeped in ritual and religious tradition.  It's also incredibly exciting to see live.  I have to admit that when I used to watch highlights on TV in Canada, I really didn't get it.  Now I think I may become a Sumo maniac.  Going to a live performance is really addictive!  I picked a great day to go, since the one Yokozuna, Hakuho, and his opponent at the level of Sekiwake, two levels down but a quickly rising star Baruto, faced off each with perfect records of 10-0 up.  Hakuho is Mongolian and he really looks almost invincible out there.  Baruto is Esthonian and just huge and really good.  Hakuho wonm, but Baruto is proving himself a real up and coming star.  Could he maybe become the first every white-skinned, blue-eyed Yokozuna?  That would be very exciting!  I am dying to go again!

今朝10時から踊りの稽古に行きました。今度舞台で花子師匠と一緒に踊ることになります。私は踊るのが全然だめです。英語の表現あります「I have two left feet」。とにかく、右手とかは強い、左手は弱いというイメージで、「私は左足が２本あります」＝「私は踊るのが下手です」。

でもとてもいい先生ととてもいいパートナーいると、自分も少し上手になりますね。写真にいる男は踊りの先生の森川先生です。とても男前ですよ！しかもめちゃやさしいです。私みたいな生徒いっても全くイライラしていません、ゆっくり教えていただいています。

女性のかたはMioさんです。今度の舞台で私のパートナーになります。踊りは最高に上手です。あととても美人で、ドキドキしまして、自分の踊りに集中するのは難しかったです。でもとてもとても楽しみにしています！

がんばります！

Today I went into the dance studio at 10 am for a dance lesson.  I will be dancing in a Japanese comic variety show at the end of the month with one of Japan's most famous comedians, Ms. Hanako Miyagawa.   Hanako shisho has been teaching me alot about comedy and she and her husband and comic partner Daisuke shisho (shisho means master) have also given me many opportunities to perform.

But I didn't think I would ever be drafted as a dancer!  I have two left feet!

Luckily, I have a great teacher in Mr. Morikawa sensei (the very handsome lad in the picture).  He is a very patient teacher and didn't get upset with me even once throughout the entire one hour lesson!

Beside Morikawa sensei is my partner in the upcoming performance, Mio san.  She is a great dancer, and stunning - it's difficult to concentrate on dancing!

I am really looking forward to the performance!  Perhaps a new career path... 

今日はずっと前からお世話になっておりますお寺の道明寺で勉強させていただきました。お客様はものすごくやさしかったです。写真は私と道明寺の住職です。住職に可愛がっていただきまして、いつもいろいろ教えていただきます。住職は来年90歳です。まだ京都も東京もどこでも一人で行っています。90際の誕生日の祝いで一緒にカナダに行きましょうかな・・・

Today I performed at the temple at Domyoji.  It was really fun, the people who came out were very very receptive.   Pictured with me is the chief priest of Domyoji, Rokujo-san.  She will be 90 years old next year, but is still as sharp as nails.  Every time I go to Domyoji she teaches me something new and fascinating.  She says the secret to staying so healthy is to have two or three pieces of chocolate every night before bed.  Great advice!  Even at 90, she still goes to Kyoto and Tokyo on her own.  Thank you everyone for a great day!

Twitterの技術を理解しようとしているわたしです...

Twitter ご存じですか？凄く話題になっていますのでちょっとやってみようと思いまして、@katsurasunshineというtwitterを始まりました。面白いそうですけど、何がそんなにいいかまだ分らないんですね。140文字以内ミニーブログを書くことですけど、短いからたくさんの人の情報を短時間に得ることがtwitterの良さですかな。分かるかたいらしゃいましたら意見をおしゃって下さい。

I started a twitter account but I have to say I'm really not sure what all the fuss is about.  I guess because you have to keep your tweets to 140 characters that allows you to follow alot of people in a short time.  It's actually quite a challenge keeping tweets to 140 characters.  It reminds me of George Bernard Shaw, "I am sorry to have written you such a long letter, I didn't have time to write you a short one."

 昨日日本対カナダのアイス・ホッケーの試合見ました。凄かったですね。日本は凄かったですね。２−１カナダにアイスーホッケーで勝つは相当凄いです。日本の選手が泣いていました。おめでとうございます！

Yesterday I watched the hightlights of the day's paralympics in Canada.  Japan beat Canada in hockey, 2-1.  It looked like a phenomenal game.  I wish I could have seen the whole game from start to finish.  Some of the Japanese players were crying they were so happy,.  Great work!

 事務所の仕事が終わってから、１１時のクローズ時間に間に合えば、最近マイブームのカフェはTully'sとなっています。コーヒーはわりと美味しいです。昔から静か図書館より、賑やかなカフェのほうが勉強しやすいです。なんでだろう。カフェだと眠くならないことは大きいと思います。今は子こどもことわざじてんで諺を勉強しています。絵もありますし全ての漢字に振り仮名がついていますので、勉強しやすいです。今藪蛇という言葉初めて発見致しました。私は特に使えそうな言葉！

Recently I have been going to Tully's cafe if our day at the office finishes on time to get there.  I have always been one to study in lively cafes rather than quiet libraries.  I always seem to fall asleep in libraries.  I am studying Japanese proverbs from a children's proverb dictionary.  It's more fun that way because there are pictures.  I just learned the phrase Bush Snake which means snake in the bush.  It's shortened from the phrase "Fish around in the bush and bring out a snake", which is an expression you can use when things backfire on you.  I particularly have many opportunities in daily life to use such a phrase...

これは弟弟子の桂三語君です。勉強熱心ですよ。一緒にランチを食べに行っても、レストランのメニュースタンドに台本を入れて、食べながら勉強しています。偉い！

ちなみに二人で事務所に戻った時に三語君が「台本レストランに忘れた！」と言ました。「取りに行きましょうか？」と聞いたら、「いやっ、大丈夫、ねたも全部覚えていますから。」

This is my little brother storyteller Katsura Sango.  He is very passionate about learning new rakugo stories.,  He is so into studying that when we went to lunch yesterday he put his script into the menu stand at the restaurant and read while he was eating.

When we got back to the office, Sango suddenly said, "Ah, I forgot my script at the restaurant!"  When I asked, "Shall we go back and get it?", he answered, "No, it's OK.  I don't need it.  I've already memorized the story."

  I went to a Japanese taiko drum store called Taiko Masa to get some Japanese drum sticks.  It's part of the rakugo training to learn to play the drums for the music that introduces each storyteller.  I figure if I practice on cushions in my apartment at home it won't be too noisy.  Peaking into the picture is Sanga.

今日太鼓正という太鼓専門店に太鼓のばちを買いに行きました。家で太鼓の練習をするためです。太鼓を叩いたら音が五月蠅いんですが、座布団を叩いたら十分練習になります。ばちの写真に邪魔しに来たのは三河君です。

三河君の携帯がボロボロになってしゃまって、新しい機能を買いました。この新しいやつの一番凄いところはカメラの「スマイル・メーター」。写真を撮ると画面に相手のスマイルパーセントが出てきます。三河君も私の８５％はまだ越えたことがありませんので、毎朝スマイル運動しています！

Sanga's cel had seen better days so he got a new one.  The new phone has a really cool function: the smile meter.  When you put it in camera mode, the smile meter displays the smile percentage of the subject.  Sanga and I have yet to produce a smile over 85%, so we are doing smile calisthenics every morning now.
